CINEMA OF SOLIDARIETY
THE WONDERS OF CINEMA MEET THE FATEBENEFRATELLI RESIDENTS
Cinematherapy is a well-known therapy that implies the vision of movies to relive the patients from chronic pain, since its psychological results have been proven to be effective. Since 2010, L’Isola del Cinema, in collaboration with the Fatebenefratelli Hospital, has been organising several free screening in the hospital venue of Sala Dell’Assunta (Tiber Island): we screen Italian comedies for free for all the patients, relatives and hospital staff.
THE ISLAND OF INTEGRATION – IN COLLABORATION WITH SANT’EGIDIO COMMUNITY
Living on the streets
In many big cities, many people live on the streets. Only in Rome is it estimated that at least 5000 people are homeless. You end up on the street for many reasons, and in a much easier way than you can ever imagine: by losing your work or of your own accommodation, marital separations, the lacerations of the human tissue in which you have always been inserted, are all reasons that can produce that precariousness that becomes the precondition of street life. And life is hard on the road. It is a life marked not only by material poverty but, often, by a condition of invisibility that easily leads to isolation, sometimes to contempt. In the precariousness of the road, freedom is lost and one becomes dependent on everything. From the meteorological climate, for example, but above all from the more or less benevolent look of the others, with the hope that someone could give you some kind of help. Because those who live on the street need help even when it does not seem obvious or does not seem to ask for it, so much so that the idea that in the end we can live this way by choice of freedom still resists: it is never like this, life on the street is not the result of a free decision but the consequence of a life torn apart in any kind of human relationships. And when you are alone it is difficult to imagine how and where to ask for help and even just understand who to trust.
The Community of Sant’ Egidio has for many years chosen to approach and support these less its fortunate friends. Stopping, talking, helping with things to eat, a bit of hot tea and a blanket is the way to establish a personal friendship that leads to trust and trust. They are simple gestures that fill, at least a little, the abyss of indifference that surrounds life – and even death – of those who live on the street. Over the years, canteens have been opened, night shelters, places for showering and hair cutting, health care centres, clothes, help with documents or other things. In almost all the places where there is a Community of Sant’ Egidio, on the street or elsewhere, meals and blankets are distributed, as the first gestures from which a relationship of friendship and trust begins.
