This selection aims at showing the portrait of the historic and authentic Europe: Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite brings us back to Queen Anne’s court, in the United Kingdom, the country where another “queen” would tread the board, becoming a legend represented in Bohemian Rhapsody. Willem Dafoe, awarded with the Coppa Volpi at Venice Film Festival in 2018, becomes Van Gogh in At Eternity’s Gate, pioneer from Netherland to France in the painter Schnabel’s film and in Disobedience, debuting English film for the Chilean director Sebastián Lelio: in his movie, the Jewish orthodox community is the starting point for a story of love and female emancipation. La Douleur, based on the autobiographical novel by Marguerite Duras, will highlight the drama of the German occupation and the heritage of Central Europe during the mid-40s, along with the 3 times Oscar nominees, Wrek on Author and Cold War.

European Women Filmaker (EWF)

On its 4th edition, EWF focuses every year on the works and masterpieces by the female filmmakers from one selected European Country. After Italy, France and Germany, the Swiss filmmakers will be this year’s protagonists and they will be presenting their long features on the Tiber Island and compete for the EWF award, in collaboration with the Swiss Institute in Rome.
